ATTENTION: SUBMISSIONS ARE CLOSED UNTIL FURTHER NOTICE. IF YOU SUBMITTED AND HAVEN’T HEARD BACK FROM US, PLEASE HAVE A LITTLE PATIENCE. RESPONSES SHOULD BE SENT OUT SOON. THANK YOU!
The Bleeding Lion is excited to read your work! We are a journal of contemporary arts and letters with a special focus on anatomy, cross-cultural, visual arts & diverse pieces. We especially like pieces that do not fit into conventional genres or canons, pieces with great emotional candor, pieces that haunt, grip and refuse to let us go back to the world. We also love macabre or suspenseful pieces, confessionals & quiet pieces, scientific & borderline macabre pieces. Acceptance is based solely on quality of your work.
General guidelines: absolutely NO previously published work (yes, even if it was only on your blog). YES to simultaneous submissions, notify us immediately if your piece is accepted elsewhere. If your piece is accepted, TBL acquires first serial rights, which revert back to the author upon publication. We kindly ask acknowledgement for subsequent reprints of your work. Reading period is year round; response time is 2-4 weeks or sooner.
Fiction: Send up to 6,000 words of your best fiction, typed in regular font like Times New Roman or Garamond, double spaced & paginated. We like character driven pieces with strong voice.
Poetry: Send 3 – 6 poems, no more than 10 pages, all in one single document, any style, any format (but no more than 1 poem per page).
Non-Fiction (CNF & Essays): Send up to 6,000 words. We are enchanted by lyrical & meditative essays, new and innovative voices that are not afraid to push boundaries.
Art/Photo: Please query us first before submitting art-pieces.
How to submit: Use our online submissions manager to submit your work. List all titles for the pieces you submit, along with a brief biographical note to be used at time of publication (feel free to brag, but again, publication is based only on pieces you submit). Email us only for general inquiries only (email@example.com); please DO NOT email submissions; they will be deleted unread. Once your submission is accepted, you will be contacted by the appropriate editor. If you piece is accepted elsewhere, simply withdraw it from the system (if one or more poems from the batch you submitted are accepted elsewhere, simply withdraw your submission and resubmit). Please submit to only one genre at a time.
